Part One - script
It is January fifth 2013. Tom and his boss, Jannine, get together for the first meeting of the year.
Jannine: Happy new year, Tom. How’s the family?
Tom: Happy new year to you, too. They’re all fine. How about yours?
Jannine: Well, Oscar had a cold but he’s getting over it now. Everyone else is fine. Did you
have a good break?
Tom: Yeah. We just relaxed at home. You?
Jannine: The same. Right. We should get started. I’ve made some plans for this year, but
before we talk about them, I want to hear what you think about last year.
Tom: Well, overall it was OK. Business was tough because of the recession but I think we
did quite well.
Jannine: What do you think we should have done differently?
Tom: Hmm, we probably should have reduced our print advertising sooner. Online
advertising is much more cost effective.
Jannine: I agree. This year, I have three goals. The first is to increase sales by 10 per cent;
the second is to reduce costs by 10 per cent; the third is to go to at least three
overseas trade fairs. We have to start selling abroad.
Tom: Right. How do we do those things?
Part Two - script
Dave: So, do you have any goals for this year?
Mags: Oh, yes. I want to lose weight and stop smoking and cut down on caffeine.
Dave: I meant at work.
Mags: Oh, work. Hmm, no. Well, yes. I want to change jobs. I hate where I work now. I
want to get a different job.
Dave: What do you want to do?
Mags: That’s the problem. I have no idea. How about you?
Dave: I want to keep doing what I’m doing now. I don’t want a promotion and I definitely
don’t want to be transferred.
Mags: That’s not really a goal.
Dave: The thing is, I like what I do and I like the people I work with.
Mags: Lucky you. Most of the people at my place are not very nice at all. Just before new
year my boss shouted at me for parking in his space, but it wasn’t me. He didn’t even
Dave: Are you going to complain?
Mags: No. If I complain, there’ll be more trouble. I got my own back, though. I put a
shrimp under his car seat on the last day of work. He didn’t find it and now his car
